Nutritious Meal/Snack Guidelines

 

In accordance with the National Association for School Accreditation, the National P.T.A., the International Reading Association and the American Dental Association, only those foods and beverages that contribute to health are to be consumed at school.  Therefore, the Academy seeks your assistance and cooperation in providing healthy foods and beverages containing no chemical additives, artificial colorings, artificial flavorings, caffeine and those which are low in sugar, for school meals and classroom parties.  We are committed to serving foods and beverages for parties, snacks and meals that contribute to the optimal health of children.

 

 

We May Not Serve Any Food Containing:

Parties – Classroom & Birthday

 

The following food items may not be brought in for classroom & birthday parties:

 

  • Cakes, cupcakes or muffins (homemade or store bought)

  • Yogurt ice cream or ice cream cakes

 

 

Packed Lunches

 

The Academy has a hot lunch program.  Children with allergies or specific food aversions may bring a packed lunch that conforms to the nutritional guidelines.  Lunches may be packed in a soft side lunch box with a cold pack to keep food safe.  We cannot refrigerate lunches or offer microwave use.  The following are some packed lunch suggestions.

 

Sandwich – chicken or turkey breast, ham, tuna salad, egg salad or meatloaf

Vegetables – raw carrot sticks, celery, cucumber, broccoli, cauliflower, or zucchini

Snacks – potato or corn chips, fruit, raisins or dates, or fruit cocktail in light syrup

 

-          The Academy will provide milk, juice or water for the children who request it.

-          No fast food will be permitted.

Acceptable Food Combinations

 

Vegetable sticks – stuffed with low fat cream cheese

Chilled Dip and Vegetables – carrots, broccoli and cauliflower sticks

Taco Dip – low fat refried beans and cheese with corn chips

Taco Salad – layered ingredients of refried beans and cheese, tomatoes, taco sauce, sour cream, and shredded cheese with corn chips

Crackers (whole wheat) – meat and cheese squares (white cheese is a good low fat artificial coloring/flavoring option)

Cheese sticks – whole wheat bread sticks and fruit

Whole Wheat Macaroni and Cheese

Fruit and Nut Mixes – raisins, dried pineapple, dried apricots, peanuts, dried figs, dried bananas, dried apricots, dried cranberry, cashews, sesame seeds, cheerios, rice chex, corn chex, wheat chex, pretzels
